Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony

In the wake of the Shirley Sherrod incident there have been some interesting things written about race relations. Sen. James Webb (evidently feeling the need to try to make people forget he is a Democrat) had a piece in the Wall Street Journal, Diversity and the Myth of White Privilege, seemingly calling for an end to race based affirmative action. “Nondiscrimination laws should be applied equally among all citizens, including those who happen to be white. The need for inclusiveness in our society is undeniable and irreversible, both in our markets and in our communities. Our government should be in the business of enabling opportunity for all, not in picking winners. It can do so by ensuring that artificial distinctions such as race do not determine outcomes.”

Ilya Solkin at The Volokh Conspiracy has a good analysis of Webb’s piece, praising him for his good points but also mentioning “key mistakes and omissions.” “Unfortunately, Webb doesn’t make clear whether his position is that affirmative action preferences should be abolished entirely or limited to African-Americans. If the latter, should they be limited to descendants of victims of slavery and Jim Crow, or should recent immigrants continue to be included (as they usually are now)?”
