Yanks third recent loss is Major

Ralph Houk, the manager of the first Yankee teams that fixed in my memory, died Wednesday. He will always be part of the roll call of those immortal early 60s Yankees along with Howard, Skowron, Richardson, Kubek, Boyer, Mantle, Maris, Tresh, and Ford. The Times obituary nicely summarizes his career.

One Response to Yanks third recent loss is Major

  1. Jim says:

“Howard, Skowron, Richardson, Kubek, Boyer, Mantle, Maris, Tresh, and Ford”….that’s a pretty darn good list…I’d still include Berra in that roll call even though he was reaching the end of his incredible career by then. Houk was a stud…and he’ll go down in history as George Steinbrenner’s first manager. We received an early warning about how crazy it was to work for George as Ralph quit that gig after one year. One season as Steinbrenner’s manager probably fell just behind the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge on the list of Houk’s personal trials and tribulations.
